Training a dog to heel

The heel command teaches the dog to walk beside you and not in front or behind you. With the heel command, your dog

will look obedient and well mannered. You can use the heel command to protect your dog while you are taking a stroll in

the park. Every dog can master the heel command within a short timeframe.

Before training your dog, you must put her on a short leash. You can prepare a few treats as a reward for the dog when she

performs well.

You must decide which side you want the dog to walk on, your left is the most common side. To entice the dog to walk

beside you, you can hold a treat in the hand on the side where you want the dog to walk and say “Heel”. The dog will move

to your side because she is tempted by the food. If the dog responds to your command, you should praise the dog and

give him the treat.
