Using Treats to Train Your Dog
Treat training is one of the best ways to motivate your dog or puppy to do what you want. You can teach tricks like sit, come, and others using treats. Also, they can serve as positive reinforcement in correcting bad behavior.
You should always have a bag of treats handy when your dog or puppy is around. Say the word “sit” and keep moving the treat above him/her so that it has to be sitting while looking at the treat. Then give the dog the treat and praise it for sitting. You should repeat this as much as possible.
After you have taught your dog how to sit, you can teach it how to lie down. Tell him/her to sit, then instead of giving it the treat right away, bring the treat down past the dog’s nose then move your fingers along the floor away from the dog, so that it has to lie down in order to reach the treat. This is a fun way to teach your dog how to sit, as there will be several occasions where your dog will try to take the treat right from your fingers before you can get it to lie down.
You can also reward your dog for coming to you with treats. Say the word come in a neutral but loud tone, and wait until your dog approaches. Then offer it a treat and verbal praise. If it does not come right away, don’t get frustrated, just attempt it again.
Finally, you can teach your dog how to use the outdoors as a restroom instead of your living room. When your dog releaves itself outside, offer it a treat afterward as well as praise and petting. Every little reward will be noticed!
Be sure you pick treats that are healthy for your dog. Foods like ice cream, chips, spicy foods, junk foods, and fried foods can cause all kinds of health problems with your dog. There are several excellent dog treat products on the market that won’t compromise your dog’s health.
