Basic Dog Life-Saving Tips
Although, you keep a constant watch over your beloved pet, you can’t always control everything that your dog does, nor what’s going to happen next. Accidents and potential physical dangers that can risk the life of your pet dog are bound to happen anytime, anywhere. It is only wise to take extra precautions to prepare yourself and keep your dog safe when these kinds of situations happen.
Here’s a rundown of a few recommended things to do to keep your dog safe:
Always keep a leash or harness by the door that you can easily grab in case you need to get out of house quickly with your dog or dogs. This is very applicable in case of a fire or other critical emergency. Keep multiple leashes if you have multiple dogs.
Collar your dog for easy identification. A collar should be a must for every dog. Collars do provide a big help when your dog gets lost or gets injured in your absence.
Tag your dog. Providing your dog with an ID tag and microchip can easily help you in tracking your pet in case he gets lost. It is also easy for rescuers to return lost dogs since they can easily locate the dog’s owners by using the information in the ID or microchip.
Be observant for signs and symptoms of possible illness that your dog may be suffering. Immediately consult your vet when you detect an illness or an abnormal behavior.
Always keep emergency phone numbers handy like vet, animal clinic, humane society, animal rescue, poison control. Make a list and print multiple copies, you can keep a copy that you can bring anywhere you go and put the rest in different areas in your house or in your car. You never know when you will need it.
Since it is very natural for owners to bring their dogs with them when they travel to different destinations, here are some recommended must-haves in order to keep your dog safe inside the car while traveling:
• Pet Seat Belt. Seat belts for dogs are now currently available in the market and come in several styles. These seat belts consist of a harness which is sized to your dog and a strap that clips into the harness and is secured by the seat belt. Some versions involve more use of the seat belt but this may mean less movement for your dog and if your pet likes to spend his time looking out of the car window while traveling, he may find it irritating and uncomfortable.
• Dog Crate. You can always crate your dog while he travels in the car with you. You can opt to get a pet barrier to keep the crate in the back of the car. Just make sure that you lock or strap the crate in a firmly to ensure it does not fall from its place while you’re driving, keeping your dog safe.
• Vehicle Barrier. Many dog owners use vehicle barriers to divide the car so passengers don’t end up sitting on dog hair, mud and sand. This device is installed behind the back seat of a station wagon or SUV to prevent your dog from going anywhere but the back of the car. Additional benefit of using vehicle barriers includes security of your dog against car accidents since your dog is confined in a limited area in your car and you don’t have to keep watch to make sure your dog is behaving properly.
